HOW DO I TRANSFER MY DRIVER’S LICENSE?

Most ex-pats who move to Abu Dhabi will have a valid driver’s license from their home country. Transferring your driver’s license internationally is a straightforward process if you meet certain criteria.

If you hold a valid driver’s license from one of the approved countries such as the US, UK, Canada, Australia, or European nations you can easily transfer your license without a driving test.

For those whose home country isn’t on the approved list, a full driving license test, theory test, and training may be required.

How do I know if I am eligible?

Verify if your country is on the list of approved countries. This can be found on Abu Dhabi Government Services

Which documents do I need?

  • Original driver’s license
  • A translated and notarised copy (if needed)
  • Passport with a valid residency visa
  • Emirates ID
  • Passport-sized photos
  • Eye test results (can be done at any approved clinic or opticians)

Where do I go to apply?

Head to your local traffic department office or Drivers & Vehicles Licensing Directorate at Hadbat Al Za’faranah, Abu Dhabi.

How do I submit my application?

Fill out the transfer application form and submit your documents along with the application

How much does it cost?

The cost ranges up to AED 850 considering:

  • AED 100 for the eye test centre
  • AED 150 for the legal translation and uploading the translation to traffic system
  • AED 600 against license issuance fees

Once approved, you’ll receive your driver’s license within a few days.

WHAT DO I DO IF I HAVE NO LICENSE AT ALL?

If you are starting from the beginning, obtaining a learning permit is the first step towards acquiring a driver’s license in Abu Dhabi.

To initiate this process, you must open a traffic file, which can be done through the TAMM portal or the Abu Dhabi Police app.

Which documents do I need to open up a driving file?

  • Original and copy of your Emirates ID card
  • One photograph
  • Eye test report (from any official clinic)

Following this, you must visit the Emirates Driving Company (EDC) to open a driving file, allowing you to commence driving lessons.

What documents do I need for driving lessons?

  • Traffic file number
  • Copy of your passport and residence visa page
  • Original and copy of your Emirates ID card
  • Two photographs
  • Eye test report from an official clinic
  • Letter of parental permission if under the legal age
  • No-objection letter from your sponsor

Do I need to take a theory test?

EDC offers theoretical courses covering eight key units essential for obtaining a driver’s license: Traffic rules; road markings, and signs; driving within city limits; driving outside city limits; driving under difficult conditions; dealing with critical situations; driving behaviour and road manners; vehicle knowledge; safety.

Upon completing the theoretical training (each session lasting two hours), you will undertake a test consisting of 35 questions. After passing, you will receive a learning permit, enabling you to begin practical lessons.

How many lessons do I need?

The number of lessons depends on the driver’s experience: beginners typically require 30 hours, intermediates 20 hours, and advanced learners 10 hours. Lessons are conducted within a controlled driving rink.

What next?

Once deemed ready, your instructor will issue a “certificate of readiness,” allowing you to schedule the practical driving test at EDC.

Upon passing the practical test, you will receive a certificate, which you can present to the Drivers and Licensing Department to obtain your driver’s license.

How much does it all cost?

Theoretical training costs approximately AED 830, with an additional AED 50 test fee. Practical lessons vary depending on the required hours, while the practical driving test fee is AED 300 (training permit and test costs).

HOW DO I RENEW MY DRIVING LICENSE?

In Abu Dhabi, renewing a driver’s license varies depending on residency. The renewal process is straightforward and can be completed online through the designated portal at TAMM Abu Dhabi.

How many years do I have to renew it?

UAE and GCC citizens are required to renew their licenses every 10 years, while foreign expatriates must renew theirs every five years.

How much does it cost?

The cost for a one-year renewal is AED 100, while a multi-year renewal will cost AED 300. Drivers are granted a one-month grace period following the expiration of their license.

Are there any penalties if I don’t renew on time?

After this grace period, a fine of AED 10 is imposed for each month the driver’s license remains expired. It is essential to renew your driver’s license within the allotted time to avoid penalties and ensure you remain in compliance with Abu Dhabi’s traffic laws.
