One million mangrove seeds planted by drones

Mangrove Seed Drone EAD

This is just the first phase of the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative.

Abu Dhabi has been going above and beyond to give back to planet Earth – and now, it’s bringing in advanced technology to help.

Using drones, Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has planted one million mangrove seeds as part of the first phase of a drone mangrove plantation project supporting the Abu Dhabi Mangrove Initiative.

The initiative also supports the capital’s plans to establish Abu Dhabi as a global hub for research and innovation while combating climate change.

Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi is the first organisation to utilise and plant mangroves at a large-scale using drones. With each planting round, EAD has been evolving so that drones can fly longer.

The environmental footprint of the methodology is low, and it’s also cost-effective. A trial is also being run on incorporating machine learning for future monitoring phases.

In Abu Dhabi, plantation programmes have helped increase the range of mangroves. In the past 10 years, EAD and its key stakeholders, from both the government and private sector have planted more than 15 million mangroves along the coast of Abu Dhabi.
