ETIHAD RAIL: New updates confirm freight network is fully operational

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, officially opened the freight line in February

Choo-choose to be a part of an exciting future ahead for the UAE!

Following the announcement of Etihad Rail’s completed construction, the freight network is now fully operational too.

While passenger lines are still awaiting an official date, over 36 million people can be expected to annually ride the Etihad Rail by 2030. Imagine travelling from the UAE capital to Dubai in just 50 minutes, now that’s something we can’t wait for!

Consisting of a fleet of 38 locomotives and over 1,000 wagons, the rail is a central part of the UAE’s national rail project. The freight route connects four major ports and seven logistics centres across the country.

Notable charging stations are located in Ruwais, the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi, Khalifa Port, Dubai Industrial City, Jebel Ali Port, Al Ghail and Fujairah Port. The locations have been chosen since they act as hubs for local and regional distribution and logistics services.

Once complete the entire rail network will stretch about 1,200 kilometres across the country. Etihad Rail will contribute to an overall reduction in CO2 by 21% per year and reduce road transport emissions per capita by 40% – all by 2050! With COP28 coming up, the UAE’s goals towards carbon neutrality by the same year seem to be getting closer by the day.
