Retro gaming exhibitions and speaking your truth await!

DATE & TIME

The NYUAD Arts Center is closing off with a myriad of interesting shows, a promising send off to 2022.

The first half of the eighth season for NYUAD Arts Center is almost at a close, and they’re definitely going out with a cultural bang!

Add a poetic spin to your weekend plans and head to Louvre Abu Dhabi. Together with The NYUAD Arts Center, here comes the return of Rooftop Rhythms as part of the Culture After Dark program.

Join leading and emerging poets, musicians, and artists as they perform original work on 16 December. The evening kicks off at 7.30pm with some smooth sets from DJ Mad Hands, with the performances beginning at 8pm. Titled ‘The First Impressions Edition’ the show celebrates Louvre Abu Dhabi’s exhibition, Impressionism: Pathways to Modernity as well, hosted by none other than Dorian Paul Rogers.

Next up through 19 December is the Coin-Op: Exploring the Spirit of ‘80s and ‘90s Arcade Games. Presented by Jonathan Bonner, Steven Doughty, Eric Martin, Jonathan Pettigrew, the same can be explored at length at the NYUAD Project Space.

Essentially, Coin-Op is an interactive installation chronicling the retro arcade experience and community spirit that lived in these spaces. From multiple-player cabinets to single-player experiences, the Coin-Op Arcade gives the audience a feel of 80’s nostalgia. Participants will have the opportunity to play many classic 1980s 8 and 16-bit games with a modern twist.

For virtual world lovers, there’s something to be experienced from the comfort of home as well! The Music and Sound Cultures Group has created a series of four short documentaries about the musical traditions of the Shihuh.

These videos document the Nadbah, the Rawāḥ, the Razīf al-Shihuh, and the M’hobi. Directed by Emirati filmmaker Amna Alnowais with Syrian cinematographer Waleed Al Madani, and investigated by Carlos Guedes; these provide invaluable insight by means of the performers’ accounts, as well as inflections based on their own performances.

Take some time off the festive season hype and dig into the past, speak your own truths, and enjoy soaking in some artistic fun!
