Let the record show that vinyl will forever be the best therapist. And Dubai-based DJ and teacher, Dr James Kelly’s solo exhibition debut at the NYU Abu Dhabi – Art Gallery will showcase the same!
Titled Phonography, Dr James Kelly’s exhibition will be housed at The Project Space located at the NYU Abu Dhabi – Art Gallery. It features the music composer’s personal collection of vinyl records that demonstrate a variety of experimental disc-cutting techniques. A curated selection of records that explore some of the medium’s creative possibilities and limitations will also be on display.

Dr James Kelly research focuses on the use of vinyl records in music composition, performance, and sound art. He examines the inventive use of a disc-cutting lathe, a machine traditionally used in the production of records.
Having been in the music scene for 20 years and pioneering the use of a vinyl lathe as part of compositional processes to create music, Dr James Kelly’s exhibition aims to demonstrate the scope of phonography as an artistic discipline.
