Suzannah Mirghani’s Cotton Queen lands in Abu Dhabi, and it’s the kind of film that stays with you.
The Sudanese filmmaker brings her feature to The Red Theater at The Arts Center on Monday, 28 September.
It screens as part of the Contemporary Arab Cinema series, presented by the NYUAD Film and New Media Program.
Set in a cotton-farming village in Sudan, the story follows teenage Nafisa.
She’s grown up on her grandmother’s tales of resistance against British colonisers — until a businessman arrives with foreign money and genetically engineered cotton.
Suddenly Nafisa finds herself at the heart of a struggle over the village’s future.
What follows is a quiet awakening, as she discovers her own strength and sets out to protect the fields and herself.
