The capital’s love affair with the sea comes vividly back to life this November
The Maritime Heritage Festival returns to Abu Dhabi for its fifth edition, running from 20 to 29 November 2026, and once again it turns the clock back to the capital’s earliest days.
It’s a chance to step into the era when Abu Dhabi’s ancestors lived in step with the sea, building a sustainable, prosperous way of life along the coast.
This is the history that shaped the city like fishing, trading and pearl diving, skills handed down carefully through the generations.
The festival recrerecreates the intimate setting of a local coastal village, complete with bustling markets and the traditional social gatherings that once held communities together.
Visitors move through it all as seafaring stories and hands-on skills are shared by traditional sailors, tradespeople and craftspeople.
Every corner is designed to feel lived-in rather than staged, so the past arrives as something you can see, hear and touch.
There’s a quiet message running through it too: preserving our heritage and our bond with the ocean matters more now than ever.
At the festival, those two threads are woven together like the fishing nets Abu Dhabi’s ancestors once crafted by hand.
Across ten days, it’s part celebration, part living archive, and entirely rooted in the sea.
