For many UAE families, UK university applications suddenly become very real in Year 12.
And this week marks the official start.
UCAS Apply opened on 12 May 2026 for students applying to begin university in autumn 2027, meaning pupils can now register, research courses and begin preparing applications in the UCAS Hub. Completed applications can then be submitted from 1 September 2026.
For families in Dubai and Abu Dhabi following the British curriculum, UCAS remains the primary route to UK higher education, including Russell Group universities, Oxbridge and most undergraduate programmes.
But while the system is familiar to UK schools in the UAE, several details regularly catch expat parents out, particularly regarding tuition fees, deadlines and application strategy.
What is UCAS?
UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) is the centralised platform used to apply to most UK universities, allowing students to submit one application for up to five courses instead of applying to each university separately.
Through UCAS, students complete their application, including personal statement responses, predicted grades and a school reference, and then receive and respond to offers.
Universities make their own admissions decisions – UCAS simply manages the process, deadlines and communication – making it the main route for UAE students applying to UK higher education.
The key UCAS 2027 dates UAE parents need to know
Here are the major dates for the 2027 admissions cycle:
- 12 May 2026 – UCAS applications open for registration and drafting
- 1 September 2026 – Completed applications can be submitted
- 15 October 2026 (6pm UK time) – Deadline for Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses
- 13 January 2027 (6pm UK time) – Equal consideration deadline for most undergraduate courses
- 25 February 2027 – UCAS Extra opens
- 30 June 2027 – Final deadline before Clearing
- 2 July 2027 – Clearing opens

For parents, the practical takeaway is this: the strongest applications are usually built well before submission deadlines.
The biggest change: the new personal statement format
One of the most significant recent changes to UCAS is the replacement of the traditional free-form personal statement.
From the 2026 admissions cycle onwards (including 2027 entry), students now answer three structured questions:
- Why do you want to study this course?
- How have your studies prepared you?
- What have you done outside of education that supports your application?
The total character limit remains 4,000 characters, but students must now structure responses across the three sections.
For many parents, this is good news. The format is clearer, less intimidating and easier for schools to support.

Five choices – but not always five universities
Students can apply for up to five courses through UCAS, either at one university or spread across several institutions.
However, there are two important restrictions:
- Students can apply to Oxford or Cambridge, not both
- Medicine, dentistry and veterinary applicants are limited to four choices in those subjects
UAE students can also apply outside the UK simultaneously – such as universities in the US, Canada, the Netherlands, and the UAE – alongside their UCAS application.
The fee-status rule
This is one of the most important and most misunderstood parts of the process for expat families.
Holding a British passport does not automatically qualify a student for “home” tuition fees.
In most cases, students must have three years of ordinary residence in the UK before the course begins to qualify for home-fee status. For many UAE-based British families, this means students are instead classified as international applicants.
That distinction matters financially.
International undergraduate tuition fees at UK universities can range from approximately £11,000 to more than £38,000 per year, depending on the course and institution, with medicine and laboratory-based degrees often significantly higher.
Each university assesses fee status independently, so families with more complex residency histories should contact admissions or the fee-status teams early.
What strong applications from UAE schools usually have in common
The strongest applicants are rarely the ones rushing applications in September.
Across leading British curriculum schools in the UAE, successful applicants typically begin preparation in Year 12 through:
- Wider reading and super-curricular activities
- Early university research
- Summer drafting of personal statements
- Finalising shortlists before Year 13 begins
For competitive universities, organisation and timing matter almost as much as grades.
