Starting “big school” is a major milestone and one that can feel just as significant for parents as it does for children
PARTNER CONTENT: At The British International School Abu Dhabi (BIS Abu Dhabi), the transition into Early Years is designed to be smooth, joyful and confidence-building from the very first step.
Created by Early Years specialists, the Get Ready for Big School programme is a free weekly initiative for children aged two to four. Through guided play, exploration and expert-led parent sessions, the programme gently introduces families to the rhythms of school life in a nurturing, welcoming environment.
Running every Tuesday from February to June, the sessions alternate weekly between child-focused play experiences and practical parent workshops.
During the Child Play Sessions, little learners enjoy sensory exploration, early STEAM activities, motor skill development and eco-garden discovery alongside BIS Abu Dhabi’s experienced teaching team. These carefully designed sessions help children build familiarity, spark curiosity and develop confidence within a school-like setting.
On alternate weeks, Parent Information Workshops offer short, accessible sessions covering essential Early Years topics from establishing positive routines and behaviour strategies to early literacy, numeracy, bilingualism and digital wellbeing. Children are welcome to continue playing in the soft play area while parents attend, making the experience relaxed and family-friendly.
The programme is intentionally flexible. Families can join at any point and attend as many sessions as their schedules allow.
Ideal for children preparing to enter Nursery or FS2, whether this year or next, Get Ready for Big School provides a gentle introduction to a new environment while giving parents clarity about their child’s next developmental steps.
