BIS Abu Dhabi celebrated its first-ever graduating cohort of the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in 2025. The results speak for themselves: a 100% pass rate, an impressive cohort average of D*DD, and top grades reaching DDD* alongside most students achieving high Distinction-level outcomes.

BTEC has long been misunderstood. “This is not about ability – it’s about learning style and aspiration,” explains Paul Cochlin, Assistant Head of Secondary School (Curriculum).
The Level 3 Extended Diploma, equivalent to three A Levels, offers a rigorous, structured programme where students complete a series of units over two years, assessed through coursework, projects and real-world tasks.

“Some students are highly academic, but cumulative exams don’t reflect their true ability,” says Cochlin. “With BTEC, the assessment makes sense to them and they flourish.”
The difference lies in how learning is experienced. Students are immersed in continuous, applied assessment. They might pitch a business idea, analyse real market scenarios or present to an audience as part of their coursework.
It is not easier, it is simply more aligned with how some students learn best, and what may be expected in the real world.
Opening doors to university—and beyond
One of the most common concerns for families is university access. Will BTEC limit options? The reality is increasingly the opposite. The Level 3 Extended Diploma carries UCAS tariff points, placing it alongside A Levels and the IB Diploma in university admissions frameworks.
Students from BIS Abu Dhabi’s first cohort have already progressed to universities in the UK and Europe, with offers from highly regarded institutions such as the University of Brighton, ICMP London in the UK and Hanze University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands – further reinforcing the credibility of the pathway.
“There’s a growing understanding,” explains Noor Fadhillah, IBDP Coordinator. “Universities are recognising the strengths of different pathways and assessing them more confidently.”
BTEC keeps doors open, while also giving students a clearer sense of direction and, as BIS Abu Dhabi’s results demonstrate, the academic outcomes to match.
Real-world readiness starts here
Where BTEC truly stands apart is in how it prepares students for life beyond school.
The programme is designed to mirror the demands of the working world. Students develop skills that go far beyond subject knowledge, including:

Assessment is varied and purposeful- ranging from presentations and reports to practical assignments rooted in real industry scenarios. Crucially, students are not just learning about industries, they are experiencing them.
