Second edition of the competition is one of the highlights of the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition
Falconry holds a special place in the UAE’s rich cultural heritage, being a symbol of pride, strength, and tradition.
Celebrating this longstanding passion, the Abu Dhabi International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX) has launched the second edition of the “Most Beautiful Falcon Hood” competition, as falconry takes centrestage at the annual event that will run from 23-29 August at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).
The inaugural edition of the competition last year was a definite showstopper, and this year organisers are bringing it back as part of continuing efforts to create awareness about the falcon hood’s historical value.
Wondering what a falcon hood (burqa) is? It’s an important accessory for training falcons to hunt. It’s a soft leather cover that fits snugly over the falcon’s head, with a little opening for its beak. It helps keep the falcon calm and focused, and it’s often made by hand or by companies specialising in falconry tools.

Some of the best creative craftsmen from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the US, Japan, France, the UK, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Taiwan, Mexico, Peru, and Chile took part last year and organisers are looking forward to another strong participation this year.
The judging panel comprises falconry experts and Emirates Falconers’ Club members, who will evaluate the hoods based on their practicality, comfort for the falcon, aesthetics, material quality, price, and adherence to the heritage. Participation is limited to manufacturers of handmade falcon hoods.
