A new in-person Smart Road Security has been launched
If your driving licence is starting to look a little worse for wear thanks to a growing collection of black points, we may have just the tonic for you.
Abu Dhabi Police has launched a new in-person service that gives eligible motorists the opportunity to reduce traffic points, or even reclaim a suspended licence, without waiting for points to expire naturally.
The new Smart Road Security platform is now open at Zayed Central Library in Al Ain, offering drivers a chance to get back on the right track while brushing up on their road safety knowledge.
The programme is aimed at drivers who have accumulated black points on their licence.
If you’ve collected between eight and 23 black points, you can reduce your total by eight points.
To do so, you’ll need to register for the programme, pay a fee of AED800 and complete a qualifying road safety course designed for traffic law violators.
It’s a practical option for motorists looking to avoid edging closer to the maximum points threshold.
For drivers who’ve hit the 24-point limit, there’s also a route back behind the wheel.
Eligible motorists can retrieve their driving licence by enrolling in the programme, paying AED2,400 and successfully completing the required awareness course.
Rather than simply handing licences back, the initiative focuses on improving driving habits and reinforcing the importance of road safety before motorists return to the road.
While it may be tempting to think of the programme as a “reset button”, that’s not really the aim.
The qualifying courses are designed to help drivers better understand traffic regulations, encourage safer driving behaviour and ultimately reduce the number of accidents on the emirate’s roads.
Abu Dhabi Police says the initiative forms part of wider efforts to improve road safety while giving motorists the opportunity to learn from past mistakes.
Of course, the easiest way to avoid paying AED800, or AED2,400, is to avoid collecting black points in the first place.
That means sticking to speed limits, avoiding distractions behind the wheel, wearing your seatbelt and following the rules of the road.
But if your licence has accumulated more points than you’d like to admit, the new Smart Road Security platform could offer a valuable second chance.
Just remember that it’s far cheaper (and much less stressful) to keep those points off your licence than it is to remove them later.
