Royal Jordanian’s new twice-weekly service makes getting to Petra a little easier
Planning a trip to Jordan just got a little easier for Abu Dhabi travellers, with Royal Jordanian launching a new direct route to Aqaba on the country’s Red Sea coast.
The new service means you can fly straight from Abu Dhabi to southern Jordan rather than heading to Amman first.
This makes it a particularly handy option if Petra and Wadi Rum are high on your list. The route will operate twice a week from 18 September.
Aqaba is a great starting point for exploring this part of Jordan, sitting close to some of the country’s biggest attractions.
Petra, the famous ancient city carved into the rock, and Wadi Rum’s huge desert landscapes are both part of the region’s popular Golden Triangle, alongside Aqaba itself.
But you don’t have to make it all about ticking off the big sights.
Aqaba is a destination in its own right, with a Red Sea coastline, beaches and plenty of opportunities to enjoy a slower few days by the water before heading off to explore more of Jordan.
And if you’re planning a longer Jordan getaway, the new route could make it easier to build a trip around several parts of the country.
Start in Aqaba, head north towards Petra and Wadi Rum, then continue on to places such as the Dead Sea and Amman for a more complete taste of what Jordan has to offer.
The airline is promoting the new route as part of its wider ExploRJordan campaign, which aims to encourage visitors to explore beyond the country’s best-known landmarks.
The new flights add to Royal Jordanian’s existing UAE network, which now includes nearly 40 direct flights a week between the UAE and Jordan.
That includes services from Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah to Amman, as well as the two new weekly Abu Dhabi-Aqaba flights.
For Abu Dhabi residents looking for a quick Jordan escape, it’s a welcome new option, and one that puts Petra, Wadi Rum and the Red Sea much closer to home.
