The maximum speed on a section of E311 has been reduced
If you use E311 to get around Abu Dhabi, there’s a new speed limit to keep in mind from today.
The maximum speed on a section of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Street (E311) has been reduced from 120kmph to 100kmph in both directions, with the change coming into effect on Monday, 14 September.
It’s worth checking exactly where the new Abu Dhabi limit applies before you put your foot down.
The change affects a section of E311 running between Al Shamkhah and Madinat Al Riyad, near Baniyas Cemetery.
The updated zone stretches between the At Turoush Street/Tawi Al Qaymah Street junctions and the Al Khayr Street interchange.
The 100kmph limit applies to traffic travelling in both directions, whether you’re heading towards Abu Dhabi or Dubai.
So, if E311 is part of your regular commute, this is one road change you’ll want to remember.
The latest reduction is part of a wider push by Abu Dhabi authorities to improve road safety and make driving conditions safer.
It follows several other speed-limit changes across the emirate over the past couple of years, including reductions on major routes such as the Abu Dhabi–Al Ain Road (E22) and Al Rawdah Road (E30).
Abu Dhabi also introduced a variable speed-limit system on Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Street in 2025, allowing limits to change depending on factors such as traffic, incidents, roadworks and weather conditions.
There’s another E311 change worth remembering.
In April 2025, Abu Dhabi Mobility removed the previous 120kmph minimum speed limit on the road.
That means drivers were allowed to travel below 120kmph, with the move designed to improve safety and make it easier for slower and heavier vehicles to use the road.
At the time, the maximum speed remained higher, but that has now changed on the affected section.
If you regularly use this part of E311, the main takeaway is simple: slow down and watch the signs.
The new maximum is 100kmph, down from 120kmph, and applies from 14 September.
With speed limits being adjusted on several major Abu Dhabi roads, it’s also worth keeping an eye out for updated roadside signs and checking your speedometer rather than relying on what the limit used to be.
So basically, new limit, same road, so ease off the accelerator.
