PARTNER CONTENT: Abu Dhabi, you won’t have to wait much longer for yet another cool museum to visit – because the official opening date for Guggenheim Abu Dhabi has just been announced.
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has confirmed that the UAE’s coolest new museum will open on 11 December 2026, bringing one of the world’s most anticipated modern art institutions to Saadiyat Cultural District.
Designed by internationally acclaimed architect Frank Gehry, the museum has already become an instantly recognisable feature of Saadiyat Island, even before it has opened to the public.

The opening of Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is another major milestone for Saadiyat Cultural District, one of the world’s most ambitious cultural developments.
The museum joins an impressive collection of institutions including Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed National Museum, Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, Manarat Al Saadiyat, Berklee Abu Dhabi and the Abrahamic Family House.
Together, these attractions are transforming Saadiyat Island into one of the Middle East’s leading destinations for art, culture and heritage, making it a must-visit for residents and tourists looking for things to do in Abu Dhabi.
What can you expect at Guggenheim Abu Dhabi?
Unlike many international museum branches, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi has been developed with a distinct identity of its own.
The museum celebrates modern and contemporary art from the 1960s to today while presenting global artistic movements through an Abu Dhabi perspective. Rather than organising works by country or chronology, it explores how artists, cultures and ideas have influenced one another across generations.
The museum has been building its permanent collection since 2009, bringing together works from around the world across painting, sculpture, photography, installation, moving image and new media.
Visitors will discover galleries organised around themes including Abstractions, Popular Culture, Land, Language and Storytelling, encouraging them to make their own connections between artworks and artistic movements.
Alongside its permanent collection, the museum will host exhibitions, commission new artworks and deliver multilingual public programmes, educational initiatives and research projects throughout the year.
Frank Gehry’s architecture makes Guggenheim Abu Dhabi a landmark
Even before visitors step inside, the building has already become one of Abu Dhabi’s defining architectural icons.
Designed by the late Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate Frank Gehry, the museum sits at the meeting point of land and sea on Saadiyat Island and draws inspiration from the traditional forms and environmental conditions of the Gulf region.
Its dramatic design is defined by ten sculptural cones, nine wrapped in stainless steel mesh and one clad in onyx and glass. Rising to 88 metres, these striking structures do more than create an iconic skyline – they provide natural ventilation and shade, helping improve the building’s environmental performance.
Inside, visitors will explore 30 galleries connected by a soaring central atrium, offering 11,600 square metres of exhibition space alongside 23,000 square metres of outdoor galleries spread across terraces and the museum’s distinctive cones.
