Zayed International Airport welcomed more than 33 million passengers

Last year was a landmark year for UAE aviation, and Abu Dhabi emerged as a clear leader in tourism and connecting the rest of the world.

Zayed International Airport welcomed more than 33 million passengers, the highest annual traffic in its history, with 8.59 million travellers passing through in the fourth quarter alone; a remarkable 13.8 per cent increase year-on-year.

These figures highlight Abu Dhabi’s growing role not just as a regional hub, but as a global gateway for business, leisure, and culture.

The emirate’s airports also saw cargo volumes climb to nearly 770,000 tonnes, reflecting Abu Dhabi’s expanding reputation in international logistics.

Investments in infrastructure and technology ensured smoother operations and elevated passenger experiences.

From AI-driven self-service platforms to advanced digital payment systems, travellers enjoyed seamless journeys through check-in, security, and boarding, while mishandled baggage performance remained impressively low.

Etihad Airways continued to broaden its global reach, flying to 91 destinations in over 50 countries, connecting Abu Dhabi to key business and leisure markets.

This expansion complements the UAE’s wider aviation ecosystem, where Emirates, flydubai, and Air Arabia also strengthened international links, offering passengers more options than ever before.

Tourism in Abu Dhabi benefited directly from this surge in connectivity. With easier access from Europe, Asia, and the Americas, the city saw growing interest in its luxury resorts, cultural attractions, and world-class events.

The tourism sector leveraged this momentum to position Abu Dhabi not just as a stopover, but as a destination in its own right, offering experiences ranging from desert adventures to high-profile sports tournaments and cultural festivals.

Awards and recognition followed. Abu Dhabi airports received international accolades for safety, operational efficiency, and sustainability, reflecting the emirate’s commitment to world-class standards.

As 2026 unfolds, the city is poised to build on this momentum, continuing to connect the UAE with the world while elevating its reputation as a leading global aviation and tourism hub.
