Step into the future with robo-taxis in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi’s robotaxi fleet is part of a broader smart mobility strategy to make 25 per cent of trips autonomous by 2040

Autonomous taxis have now been introduced on Al Reem and Al Maryah Island

Imagine strolling onto Al Maryah or Al Reem Island and seeing a sleek robotaxi glide up, no driver, just the hum of futuristic wheels.

That dream is now reality in Abu Dhabi, where autonomous taxis now cover roughly half of the city’s core areas, including two of its busiest hubs: Al Maryah (the financial heart) and Al Reem (a vibrant residential-commercial mix).

This rollout builds on WeRide’s earlier cities of service, Yas and Saadiyat Islands and routes to Zayed International Airport, that started in 2021.

Since late 2024, these robotaxis became available via Uber in Abu Dhabi, initially with safety drivers aboard; by summer 2025, fully driverless rides are expected to go commercial, pending approvals

Since launching on the Uber platform, Abu Dhabi’s robotaxi fleet has tripled in size, part of a broader smart mobility strategy to make 25 per cent of trips autonomous by 2040.

Why it’s such a big deal:

Feel the RoboRide: No drivers, just smooth, tech-powered transport.

City meets science fiction: Riding through dense traffic in driverless vehicles feels straight out of the future.

Smart vision in motion: It’s part of Abu Dhabi’s plan to transform city transport.

So next time you’re strolling through Al Maryah or Al Reem, keep an eye out; your future Uber may just have no driver at all.

And yes, that’s as cool as it sounds.
