Many recent factors has led to the decision being made by the airline
Wizz Air will cease all Wizz Air Abu Dhabi operations from 1 September , citing persistent engine troubles, regional conflicts, and regulatory challenges.
These factors have increased operational costs for the Hungary-based airline, prompting a strategic refocus on its core European markets.
If you were planning a European escape, now’s the time to double-check your itinerary. Some flights have already wrapped up, while others are set to fly their final routes over the coming weeks, offering a last chance to enjoy these connections before they go off the radar.
Catch the last flights before these routes close:
Varna – Final flight: 14 July
Belgrade – Final flight: 19 July
Tirana – Final flight: 20 July
Kutaisi – Final flight: 29 July
Sarajevo – Final flight: 31 August
Services to Sofia and Cluj have already wrapped up. Meanwhile, routes to Budapest (until 1 September), Vienna (until 21 September), Krakow (29 July–19 September), and Katowice (until 26 October) will soon follow.
Even routes to Astana and Samarkand, set to start this November, have been put on hold.
If you’re one of the many holding return tickets on cancelled routes, the airline is offering full refunds; even if your outbound flight went ahead as planned.

What’s behind the big shift?
It’s part of a strategic realignment as Wizz Air manages ongoing engine inspections on its next-gen A321neo fleet.
The Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM engines have been impacted by dust ingestion due to regional conditions, forcing the temporary grounding of dozens of aircraft.
The result: a necessary scale-back in route frequency to maintain efficiency and reliability.
Looking ahead
The Belgrade and Sarajevo routes, which saw strong demand since their launch in 2021, were among the airline’s most ambitious year-round offerings, with up to five weekly flights to Serbia and seasonal daily service to Bosnia.
In 2024 alone, the Belgrade route carried more than 82,000 passengers.
Now, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is shifting focus; possibly clearing the runway for new route announcements, fleet optimisation, and enhanced operational resilience moving forward.
