All your questions answered on the Disney world-first theme park on Abu Dhabi’s iconic Yas Island
Abu Dhabi is getting a little more magical. The Middle East’s first Disney theme park resort is taking shape on Yas Island, with the waterfront destination set to rise on Yas North along the E12 Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Highway.
The location gives Disney a spectacular setting by the water, with plenty of room to dream big.
The Walt Disney Company and Miral are bringing the project to life, making it Disney’s seventh theme park resort worldwide and its first new destination since Shanghai Disney Resort opened in 2016.
And this won’t simply be a Disney park dropped into Abu Dhabi. Walt Disney Imagineering is creating something designed to feel distinctly of the emirate, drawing inspiration from its mangroves, oases, desert landscapes, marine life and dazzling modern skyline. The result is a new Disney world where Abu Dhabi itself becomes part of the story.
At the heart of the concept is a spectacular crystalline waterfront castle, promising a very different take on the traditional Disney icon. Add in Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World and SeaWorld nearby, and Yas Island is looking more magical by the minute
DISNEY THEME PARK IN ABU DHABI – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
What was announced about Disney in Abu Dhabi?
The Walt Disney Company and Miral announced plans for a new Disney theme park resort on Yas Island, marking Disney’s first destination in the Middle East and its seventh theme park resort worldwide.
The resort will have a distinctly Emirati-inspired identity, with its design and experiences drawing on Abu Dhabi’s culture, architecture and natural landscapes.
You can expect Disney magic to meet local influences, with inspiration from the UAE’s mangroves, desert, oases and marine environments, creating a theme park unlike any other in the Disney portfolio.
Who is behind the project?
The project is a collaboration between The Walt Disney Company and Miral, Abu Dhabi’s leading creator of immersive destinations. Miral will lead development and operations, while Disney will oversee creative design and attraction development.
Where exactly will the Disney park be located?
Disney Abu Dhabi will be built on the waterfront on the northern side of Yas Island, in the Yas North area near the E12 Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Highway.
Disney CEO Bob Iger’s site visit and photos have provided strong clues to the location, although the exact plot has not been officially confirmed.
Why Abu Dhabi?
Abu Dhabi’s location was a major factor in Disney’s decision to bring its first Middle Eastern theme park resort to the UAE.
Around one-third of the world’s population can reach the capital within a four-hour flight, while Abu Dhabi and Dubai’s airports welcome around 120 million passengers each year, giving Disney access to a huge and highly connected international audience.
But the appeal goes beyond geography. Disney was also drawn to Abu Dhabi’s forward-thinking outlook, cultural ambition and appetite for creativity, technology and major tourism projects. In the Disney+ documentary Disney Worldbuilders, Bob Iger describes the emirate as “an oasis of the world” and praises its potential, design ethic and optimistic vision for the future.
For Disney, it is a combination that makes Abu Dhabi more than just a convenient location — it offers a gateway to new audiences while providing a distinctive cultural and creative setting for its next generation of storytelling.
What makes this Disney park unique?
The Abu Dhabi park is expected to feature a modern castle and groundbreaking architecture, showcasing advanced technology and original designs not seen in other Disney parks.

What did leaders say about the project?
For Abu Dhabi, the project represents much more than another major attraction. Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has highlighted the role of the creative and cultural economy in the emirate’s wider growth ambitions, while Disney CEO Bob Iger has described the resort as a “cultural, entertainment and technological marvel”.
That ambition is echoed by HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, who has described the project as an experience that pays homage to the past, offers a glimpse of the future and “cements our present”.
It is this meeting of heritage and imagination that could ultimately give Disney Abu Dhabi its own identity – familiar Disney storytelling, but told through an unmistakably Abu Dhabi lens.
When will the park open?
There is still no confirmed opening date for Disneyland Abu Dhabi, so for now, the early 2030s looks like the safest bet. Disney Experiences chairman Josh D’Amaro previously said a project of this scale could take one to two years to design, followed by another four to six years of construction. That would put the resort somewhere around 2030 to 2033, depending on how the project progresses.
How big will the resort be?
Specific details regarding the resort’s size and capacity have not yet been disclosed. However, it is expected to serve as a major anchor attraction, complementing Yas Island’s established portfolio of world-class destinations, including Ferrari World and Warner Bros. World.
Will this park offer experiences found in other Disney resorts?
Yes, the park is expected to feature experiences familiar from other Disney resorts, while also incorporating original attractions and elements designed specifically for the region, drawing on Disney’s latest creative and technological innovations.
How will it impact tourism and the economy?
The development of Disneyland Abu Dhabi is projected to have a substantial impact on the emirate’s tourism and economy. The park is expected to attract both regional and international visitors, significantly boosting family-oriented and cultural tourism in line with Abu Dhabi’s broader vision as a world-class leisure and entertainment destination.
Beyond its appeal to tourists, the resort will generate a wide range of employment opportunities across construction, operations, hospitality, and creative sectors, supporting the growth of local talent.
