Stop what you’re doing and listen up because Abu Dhabi’s fun metre is about to go through the roof.
Shooting its way into the capital’s entertainment scene, Zero Latency on level three of The Galleria Al Maryah Island, brings the world of virtual reality gaming to Abu Dhabi.
Having pressed the power button last July, the free-roaming gaming experience gets gamers off the couch and using their feet (as well as their thumbs) in its slick space, replete with a power pack, VR headset and head phones and gun.
Team Yalla went along Sunday to get an exclusive preview of the new addition to the gaming library, Outbreak Origins – a thrilling zombie shooter game that will be launched in October (just in time for Halloween) – and it is safe say we had a blast (sorry, not sorry).
Arriving at the venue, guests will first sign in on tablets so that they can be registered on the system (your score will be broken down and sent to your email). You can book online via Zero Latency to secure your slot or walk-in.
Once registered, we enter the briefing room where Game Master Jason explains all the processes that will take place (it’s important to listen as it will keep you safe when zombies are attacking).
Then it’s time to strap up. Hair nets and eye protectors are provided along with a charged power pack. There are no cables or wires which mean players are completely free to roam the tennis court sized room. The system’s sensors will detect when you are too close to a teammate or a wall, so there is no fear of any bumps or bruises. When ready, the VR headset comes down over our eyes and we step into an alternate reality.
We are transferred to a world that has been overrun by zombies. Accommodating up to eight players, teams are split into two groups where we must not allow the cure to fall into the wrong hands. The zombie attacks are relentless and communication with your team mates is crucial to advance the next stage (you’ll find out who your real friends are if they come to your aide when you cornered by a swarm).
Everything feels so realistic to the point that when you are confronted by a ledge at the top of a tall building, the heart rate starts to rocket. Even walking upstairs will have lifting your leg over an imaginary stair. The attention to detail is incredible from the sound and reloading of the gun to the feeling of falling out of helicopter, you are truly believe in another world and not just in the Zero Latency room.
Team Yalla of course fulfils their mission and wrestles back the precious serum from grasp of evil while eliminating a hundreds of zombies (you’re welcome Abu Dhabi).
