This fun new initiative helps families read 1,000 books before children enter kindergarten
Tiny hands and curious minds are invited to turn the page on a big adventure as The Abu Dhabi Children’s Library has launched the globally celebrated early literacy programme, ‘1000 Books Before Kindergarten’.
Part of the Cultural Foundation under the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), this initiative is guided by the cheerful motto, “Reading Starts from Day One”.
This encourages families to snuggle up with their little ones, from newborns to five-year-olds, and share 1,000 stories before stepping into kindergarten.

The programme isn’t just about hitting a number; it’s about sparking imaginations, nurturing language skills, and building a lifelong love of reading.
To kick things off, Abu Dhabi Children’s Library will host a special parent orientation session on Friday, 6 February at 5pm, where caregivers can learn fun read-aloud techniques.
You can also discover easy ways to weave storytime into daily routines, and explore curated book lists to keep little readers excited and engaged.
Think of it as a roadmap to 1,000 tiny adventures; each page a step toward a world of wonder.

The programme celebrates milestones along the way, with achievements marked every 200 books, giving young readers plenty of encouragement, and bragging rights.
When the magical 1,000-book goal is reached, families will be invited to a special celebration to honour the journey, rewarding curiosity, dedication, and a love of stories.
Parents and caregivers are the heroes of this initiative, acting as first teachers and champions of their children’s early literacy.
With support from the library, families will have guidance, reading tips, and tools to make storytime fun, interactive, and part of everyday life.
