Here’s where you can find the UAE’s first wind farms

Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council, launches the wind power project on Sir Bani Yas Island

Spoiler alert: It’s in Abu Dhabi

Solar panels are so last season, the UAE’s renewable energy game is about to blow you away.

That’s right, the country has commenced operations of its first utility-scale wind project – right here in Abu Dhabi.

The project can power 23,000 homes and displace 120,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

With a combined capacity of 103.5 megawatts (MW), the wind farms built across four locations were inauguratedby Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council.

Developed by Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company

You can spot them across Abu Dhabi’s Delma Island (with a 27-MW capacity), Al Sila  (27 MW), Sir Bani Yas Island (45 MW) and Fujairah’s Al Halah (4.5 MW).

While the country wasn’t able to harness wind energy earlier due to low wind speeds, innovations in climate technology have now paved the way for the project.

The UAE’s grid is powered by a mix of generation sources, including landmark solar, nuclear and waste-to-energy plants. We’re definitely a big fan of the project!
