In the announcement on National Environment Day, the UAE president announced the extension of the Year of Sustainability
Following a massively successful landmark COP last year, the UAE President has now decided to carry the Year of Sustainability into 2024 as well.
Extending 2023’s theme into the new year, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan made the announcement on National Environment Day.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the President said, “On this occasion, we affirm that protecting the environment and preserving resources is a basic priority within the UAE’s established sustainability approach, and a collective responsibility for all members of society.”

In 2023, the Year of Sustainability championed raising awareness of the UAE’s sustainability values, encouraging behaviour changes that inspire collective progress. In 2024 as well, the theme continues to invite everyone that calls the UAE home to join in the collective effort to adopt sustainable practices through a range of community-driven initiatives and activities themed around sustainability.
The team extends its invitation to individuals and communities to engage in shaping initiatives for the coming year. You can email the Year of Sustainability team with any ideas for impactful activities, innovative initiatives, and community-driven projects.
The year-long activations will be overseen by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President, Deputy Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Presidential Court, and Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
