The EAD takes a step towards sustainability at COP27

The MoD signed with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment and Majid Al Futtaim Retail seeks to integrate sustainability in both public and private sectors.

The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment UAE (MOCCAE) and Majid Al Futtaim Retail, during the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27).

Currently being held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, the move comes as a dedicated step to promote the implementation of innovative and sustainable solutions. The signing was attended by several notable and high-level government personas as well as relevant employees.

The purpose of the MoU is to enhance cooperation between the parties to further integrate sustainability in the public and private sectors. Additionally, it seeks to help conserve natural and environmental resources by encouraging the use of reusable products to address the challenge of excessive plastic waste.

The three entities share a set of guiding principles in support of the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative to achieve climate neutrality in the region. This includes encouraging the consumption of reusable products and alternatives with a low carbon footprint.

Additionally, studies are also bein conducted into consumer incentives when it comes to purchasing reusable products. As owner of Carrefour in the UAE, this where Majid Al Futtaim can particularly contribute.

Through the MoU, the three organisations will enhance awareness and knowledge of the environmental impact of plastic pollution, most importantly single-use plastic bags. They will work closely to measure the impact of the initiative by monitoring the decrease in single-use plastic bag usage and the rate of reduction of greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the switch to reusable alternatives.

There have already been several initiatives conducted in the region around the same, particularly through partnering with schools and running impactful campaigns. With green shopping habits continually rewarded and businesses edging towards more sustainable practices, the future might just be taking a green and good turn.
