IT’S A SLAM DUNK: WNBA legend Lisa Leslie can’t wait to come back to Abu Dhabi

Basketball icon Lisa Leslie talks of her short but sweet adventures in Abu Dhabi and why she’s eager to return

One of the most recognisable faces in women’s basketball was one of Abu Dhabi’s most recent guests, and it looks like WNBA legend Lisa Leslie can’t get enough of the stunning city.

Lisa, an eight-time WNBA All-Star, three-time WNBA MVP, and four-time Olympic gold medallist, was in the UAE capital along with NBA icon Allen Iverson for the culmination of the Jr. NBA Abu Dhabi League.

“I want to be here to help grow the game of basketball, but the lifestyle is also amazing,” says Lisa in an exclusive interview with Yalla Abu Dhabi.

Known as one of the sport’s outspoken leaders both on and off the court, the basketball Hall of Famer made sure to connect with young players during a huddle after one of the games on the league’s final playdate.

“When I was 12, I didn’t know which way to run, I didn’t know what travel was, the ref would blow the whistle and I would not even understand what the calls were,” says Lisa, who retired from the WNBA in 2009 but remains the all-time leading scorer and rebounder of the Los Angeles Sparks, offering encouragement to players who are just starting out with their basketball journey.

“Never think that you can’t get to another level. The key is to just put the time in to practise every single day.”

While her enthusiasm for basketball was palpable, Lisa was equally eager to share stories of her adventures as a first-time visitor to the city.

The statuesque celebrity athlete, who at six feet, five inches tall was the first player ever to dunk in the WNBA, was an easily recognisable figure as she made the most of her short trip to the emirate, enjoying the sights as well as the city’s culinary delights.

“I was at the St. Regis, which has obviously amazing food. The experience there was great,” she says.

“I had a chance to go on Saadiyat Island to see the water and get a look at the lagoon. I will get a chance to go to the Louvre later for a private tour. So I’m really excited about that.”

Also on the agenda was a visit to the Grand Mosque, which Lisa says was one of the Abu Dhabi landmarks she was looking forward to visit.

“Aside from that, I went to Ferrari World, which is a lot of fun as well. I think the attractions are amazing, the food has been excellent, but the people are more amazing.”

The celebrated athlete could not emphasise enough the warm hospitality she’s received during her stay in Abu Dhabi, as she revealed plans of a return trip soon with her family.

“I love the city’s architecture, the buildings,” says the devoted wife and mother of two, “but more importantly, the people. It’s been awesome meeting so many amazing people.

“I’ve actually been inspired by Abu Dhabi and the people here, and I can’t wait to come back and bring my children here as well.”
