The Middle East’s ‘first-ever’ long-distance triathlon is heading to Abu Dhabi
Clear your calendar for 3–7 April 2025 because the Middle East’s first-ever long-distance triathlon is heading to Abu Dhabi.
Under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ADNEC Group has just announced the Challenge Sir Bani Yas Triathlon, and it’s making waves as the first of its kind in the entire MENA region.
So, what’s the big deal?
Well, for starters, this long-distance race is going to be HUGE. We’re talking over 2,800 athletes pushing their limits and 1,500 local and international visitors flocking to witness the action.
And the challenge?
It’s no small feat! Competitors will be swimming a solid 3.8 km, cycling for a whopping 180 km, and running a full marathon of 42.2 km.
All of this will unfold over 17 gruelling hours across various stunning stages on Sir Bani Yas Island.
If that sounds a bit too intense for you, don’t worry! There’s also a middle-distance triathlon option, which includes a 1.9 km swim, a 90 km bike ride, and a 21.1 km run.
So, there’s something for both hardcore athletes and those who want a slightly shorter (but still intense) challenge.

Arif Al Awani, the Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council, is buzzing about the collaboration.
He’s confident that the inaugural Challenge Sir Bani Yas will reflect Abu Dhabi’s growing reputation as a sports hub, putting the emirate on the global map for world-class sporting events.
And with the technical and logistical expertise of ADNEC Group, it’s bound to be a massive success.
Speaking of ADNEC Group, Humaid Matar Al Dhaheri, their CEO, highlighted the race’s importance in positioning Abu Dhabi as a hub for international events.
And what better place to host than the picturesque Sir Bani Yas Island? With its top-notch infrastructure and jaw-dropping natural beauty, it’s the perfect backdrop for this unforgettable experience.
But it’s not just about the sport. This event is expected to boost the local economy, increase hotel bookings, and promote sustainable growth in the Al Dhafra region. So, everyone’s a winner!
