From its anticipated opening date to its headline-making architecture and global art collection
Few projects in the capital have generated as much buzz as Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Set to bring a powerhouse line-up of modern and contemporary art to the UAE, this mega museum is expected to become an instant architectural icon the moment it opens.
Here’s everything we know so far, from the design to the art collection and what’s happening with the opening date.
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi: everything you need to know
So, when can we actually visit?
While we’re getting closer, there’s still no confirmed public opening date. Construction is progressing steadily, so keep your eyes peeled for an announcement.
What will the building look like?
Prepare for something dramatic. The museum has been designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry, the creative force behind some of the world’s most recognisable cultural landmarks.
His design for the Abu Dhabi outpost draws inspiration from the UAE’s desert surroundings and traditional wind towers.
The striking asymmetrical cones that define the exterior aren’t just for show, they’ll function as entrances and outdoor exhibition areas.
Inside, the scale is just as impressive. The museum will feature 28 galleries spanning 12,080 square metres of indoor exhibition space, plus an additional 23,000 square metres of outdoor display areas across plazas, terraces and an atrium.

With a total gross floor area of 80,000 square metres, it will be the largest museum in the Guggenheim network worldwide.
Beyond gallery spaces, visitors can expect a centre dedicated to art and technology, a children’s education facility, archives, a research library and even a conservation laboratory.
Where exactly will it be?
In case you haven’t spotted yet, the museum will anchor the ever-expanding Saadiyat Cultural District on Saadiyat Island, already one of the most culturally rich corners of the UAE.
It will sit alongside major institutions including Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Abrahamic Family House and teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi.
What kind of art will be inside?
Expect a truly global perspective. The museum’s focus is on modern and contemporary art, with works dating from the 1960s to today.
The collection already includes more than 970 artworks by 429 artists representing over 70 countries, with a notable emphasis on West Asia and neighbouring regions. The goal is to showcase how different artistic voices have shaped the modern world.
There will also be temporary exhibitions designed to spark new conversations around global art movements and contemporary issues.
Curators have spent nearly two decades building this collection, so anticipation is understandably high.
Who’s behind the project?
Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is a partnership between the Department of Culture & Tourism – Abu Dhabi and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.
The foundation oversees several world-famous institutions, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in Spain.
