Exploring the natural world is at the heart of early years learning at Nord Anglia

From designing farmers’ markets to growing their own produce and getting messy in mud gardens, children at Nord Anglia Education (NAE) schools in the UAE learn through play in purpose-built spaces designed just for them.

Across four schools, these hands-on environments foster creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration among children aged 3 to 6.

Team Yalla takes a closer look at how these sustainability-focused areas are shaping early years education.

Bringing learning to life

At The British International School Abu Dhabi (BIS Abu Dhabi), the Eco Edventure facility, the first of its kind in Abu Dhabi, serves as an outdoor learning environment to integrate sustainability into the curriculum.

The space includes a gardening zone, a kitchen for cooking harvested produce, and exploration areas with natural materials. According to Ms Leake, EYFS Leader at BIS Abu Dhabi, “The Eco Edventure allows children to take ownership of their learning in a way that simply isn’t possible in a traditional classroom.

Through nature-based experiences, they build confidence, resilience and essential life skills that will benefit them for years to come.”

Similarly, Nord Anglia International School Dubai (NAS Dubai) has introduced construction zones, gardening areas, and a mini-market project where children can learn about sustainability and resource management.

Karen Farrell, Assistant Head of Primary at NAS Dubai, notes that these spaces have contributed to improvements in “problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.”

Creativity, curiosity and collaboration

At Swiss International School Dubai (SISD), play-based learning is key to early years education. Facilities such as mud gardens, growing gardens, and a STEAM alley allow young learners to experiment and explore.

Fiona Ryan, Deputy Head of Primary at SISD, explains that play-based learning helps children develop key skills in a structured but engaging way.

“Play-based learning is the cornerstone of early childhood education. We strongly believe that through play, young children develop essential social skills and build a foundation for critical thinking.”

At Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi (NAS Abu Dhabi), the early years curriculum is supported by a dedicated EYFS building with a central playground, library, and multi-purpose learning areas.

The school focuses on a holistic approach, integrating play into daily learning activities while encouraging collaboration and curiosity.

As more schools adopt play-based learning strategies, purpose-built spaces are becoming an integral part of early childhood education.

These initiatives aim to provide children with opportunities to explore, create, and develop essential life skills in an engaging and supportive environment.
