How understanding learning powers critical thinking and independence
The British International School (BIS) Abu Dhabi is part of a global pilot study exploring how metacognition—understanding how we learn—can transform education.
Conducted by Nord Anglia Education in partnership with Boston College, the project involves 27 schools across 17 countries and integrates innovative Thinking Routines developed by Harvard’s Project Zero.
These strategies aim to enhance students’ critical thinking, independence, and adaptability.
Early findings are impressive: 84% of students reported a better understanding of their learning processes, 75% gained greater independence, and over two-thirds improved their creativity, collaboration, and curiosity.
At BIS Abu Dhabi, the impact is already visible. “Our students are more reflective, independent, and collaborative, which enhances their academic success and wellbeing,” said Victoria Juett, Secondary Assistant Headteacher.
