Abu Dhabi Reads launched to celebrate the beginning of UAE Reading Month

DATE & TIME

Two major activations will be taking place for Abu Dhabi Reads.

Calling all bookworms, March sees the return of UAE Reading Month and the capital is celebrating with Abu Dhabi Reads.

Designed to foster a daily habit among everyone living in Abu Dhabi, the initiative headed by the Abu Dhabi Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK) will see two main activations taking place throughout the month of March.

From 4 March, Umm Al Emarat Park will be hosting a number of events including creative writing, bookmark design, language workshops, storytelling training and public speaking, as well as puppet shows.

Children will even have the opportunity to engage in interactive storytelling sessions presented by Abu Dhabi based authors.

The park pop-up will be open to members of the public from 5pm to 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays and from 3pm to 8pm on Sundays.

The second major activation will see ADEK launch its Library on Wheels which will see a vehicle tour Abu Dhabi schools, offering children the opportunity to exchange books.

The Library on Wheels will move to key landmarks on midweek afternoons and weekends to offer non-students a chance to experience new books and storytelling sessions.

Speaking on the launch of the initiative, a spokesperson for ADEK said; “People are never alone with a book; reading opens the mind to new perspectives and has proven to be a critical enabler in developing students’ knowledge and improving their cognitive and communication skills.

“In keeping with the National Plan for Reading, we are taking Abu Dhabi Reads campaign to the community to foster the importance of reading and bring books closer to Abu Dhabi schools and the wider community, encouraging them to take up reading as a daily habit.”

Since 2017, the UAE celebrates March as the reading month to encourage and establish a culture of reading in society.

The annual event is central to the Emirates’ National Plan for Reading which aims to enhance the literacy skills of UAE nationals by 2026.
