The landmark museum earns recognition for its architecture, sustainability, and cultural storytelling

Abu Dhabi’s Zayed National Museum has been recognised as one of the World’s Most Beautiful Museums 2026 by Prix Versailles.

Presented annually at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, this is one of the most respected international awards available for architecture and design.

The museum is one of only seven institutions worldwide to be included on this year’s list, and the only representative from the region, highlighting its standout architectural design, environmental innovation, and cultural significance on a global stage.

Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Lord Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, the museum is a defining landmark within Saadiyat Cultural District.

Its most striking feature is a series of five steel towers, inspired by the wings of a falcon in flight; a powerful nod to the UAE’s deep-rooted tradition of falconry. Rising to 123 metres, these towers also make it the tallest structure in the district.

The towers act as thermal chimneys, naturally regulating airflow, while the textured base of the building reflects the UAE’s landscape and helps reduce solar heat gain.

Surrounding the museum, Al Masar Garden introduces native planting and traditional falaj irrigation systems, reinforcing the project’s commitment to sustainability and local heritage.

Inside, the museum’s galleries take visitors on a journey through more than 300,000 years of human history in the region, from early archaeological discoveries to the formation of the modern UAE.

The narrative is rooted in the vision and legacy of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the Founding Father of the UAE, whose values of preservation, identity, and cultural continuity shape the institution.

This year’s Prix Versailles ‘World’s Most Beautiful Museums’ list also includes standout institutions from China, Japan, Lithuania, the United States, and Uzbekistan.

From this global selection of seven, three will go on to receive additional World Titles for Interior and Exterior design.

For Abu Dhabi, the recognition reinforces the museum’s position not only as a cultural landmark, but as a globally significant example of how architecture, sustainability, and storytelling can come together in one space.
