Abu Dhabi is officially set to become the home of the world’s second Sphere venue, marking one of the most ambitious entertainment developments in the city’s modern history.
The initial announcement was made in October 2024, revealing a major partnership between Sphere Entertainment Co. and Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi to bring the next-generation dynamic venue to the UAE capital.
The project builds on the global success of Sphere Las Vegas, which opened in 2023 and quickly became one of the most talked-about entertainment landmarks in the world. Now that the location and completion date for Sphere Abu Dhabi have been announced, it’s time to get excited.
A new era of entertainment
The Sphere is not designed as a traditional arena. Instead, it’s a completely new category of live entertainment; one where architecture, technology, and storytelling merge into a single experience.
Inside the Abu Dhabi Sphere, audiences can expect a massive spherical structure designed for full sensory immersion, ultra-high-resolution wraparound LED interior displays, advanced spatial audio systems delivering precise, directional sound, and large-scale productions built specifically for the dome environment
Rather than watching a show from a distance, visitors will experience performances that surround them visually and sonically.
A global entertainment platform
One of the key ambitions behind the project is to operate the Sphere as a year-round entertainment destination.
This means a constant schedule of live concerts and international artist residencies, immersive cinematic experiences, original ‘Sphere Experiences’ designed specifically for the venue format, and large-scale multimedia storytelling events.

Current ongoing and upcoming residencies and shows include Backstreet Boys from July to August 2026, Kenny Chesney in June and July, No Doubt through May and June, and huge runs from Eagles and Metallica stretching into 2027.

Electronic music fans are also getting immersive performances from ILLENIUM, while audiences can step inside cinematic productions like The Wizard of Oz at Sphere, which transforms the classic story into a fully surrounding visual experience.

So, when the Abu Dhabi version finally opens on Yas Island, it could potentially host everything from global music residencies and blockbuster films to sporting spectacles, cultural productions, and large-scale entertainment experiences unlike anything currently available in the region.

Under the terms outlined in the announcement, DCT Abu Dhabi will fund the construction of the venue.
Sphere Entertainment will provide design expertise, proprietary technology, and intellectual property.
DCT Abu Dhabi will pay a franchise initiation fee for the rights to build and operate the venue concept.
After completion, Sphere Entertainment is expected to continue supporting the venue through creative content licensing, branding, advisory services, and operational support.
This structure is designed to ensure the Abu Dhabi Sphere maintains the same technological and creative standards as the original while allowing local integration and programming flexibility.

Where will it be located?

While final design details are still in development, Abu Dhabi’s Sphere is expected to be closely based on the Las Vegas model, using the same core technologies and immersive design principles.
That includes the same spherical architectural concept, comparable seating capacity (20,000), proprietary LED and audio systems developed by Sphere Entertainment, and content built specifically for immersive dome storytelling
However, it is not expected to be a direct replica in programming or experience.
Instead, Abu Dhabi’s version will likely feature a mix of international touring productions, regionally curated cultural experiences, locally relevant immersive shows, and have content tailored to Middle Eastern audiences and tourism strategy.
In other words, the technology will be shared, but the experience will be locally shaped.
Economic and tourism impact
The Sphere is also positioned as a long-term economic driver for Abu Dhabi’s tourism sector.
It is expected to attract millions of international visitors annually, increase demand for entertainment-led tourism on Yas Island, support hospitality, retail, and cultural sectors, and strengthen Abu Dhabi’s global profile as a destination for innovation and entertainment
This aligns with the emirate’s broader Tourism Strategy 2030, which focuses on expanding cultural offerings and creating high-impact visitor experiences.
Timeline: when could it open?
While there is no confirmed opening date yet, it has been announced that construction will be completed by the end of 2029.
