The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi unveils an exciting start to 2025 Spring Season

 

The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) is kicking off the 2025 Spring Season in style, continuing its landmark 10th anniversary celebration.

With an eclectic lineup of performances, workshops, and cultural showcases, this season promises unforgettable moments for the Abu Dhabi community.

Maysoon Zayid returns with her signature wit

Back by popular demand, comedian, author, and disability advocate Maysoon Zayid will perform two shows filled with her trademark humor and heartfelt storytelling. Known for her candid and hilarious take on family, culture, and living with cerebral palsy, Maysoon’s show Bint Balad is an inspiring tale of resilience.

A West African musical journey with Yahael Camara Onono

On Thursday, 16 January, master djembe drummer and band leader Yahael Camara Onono takes the stage with Hakili Koura: A New Mentality. Featuring the vibrant sounds of West Africa, the performance is a powerful blend of folklore, history, and live music. Accompanied by an ensemble of talented musicians and dancers, Yahael will bring the traditions of the Mandé peoples to life.

Dance and culture come together in ‘Beytna’

 

Contemporary dance takes centre stage on Thursday, 30 January, with Beytna by Cie Omar Rajeh | Maqamat. This unique production, supported by Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels, combines the dynamics of Arab family life with a feast of movement and music. Dancers, choreographers, and musicians meet on stage over a symbolic banquet, celebrating food, culture, and togetherness.

Workshops that inspire and connect

 

The Arts Center’s educational offerings continue with engaging workshops this February:

The DIY Approach of KOKOKO! (12 February at 6.30pm) – Learn from innovative artists Xavier Thomas and Makara Bianko.

AfroCuban Music with Cimafunk and La Tribu (February 12 at 7.30pm) – Dive into the rhythms of AfroCuban music with the dynamic Cimafunk.

 

The Tamaas Festival: A musical fusion

 

Mark your calendars for 13 February, as the Tamaas Festival brings an electrifying lineup to Abu Dhabi. The event includes performances by Cimafunk, KOKOKO!, Abosahar, and Aïta Mon Amour. With music that shatters boundaries, this festival is set to be an exhilarating experience.

 

What makes this season special?

 

This year’s theme, ‘Looking Back and Looking Forward,’ celebrates The Arts Center’s integration with academia and community. The Executive Artistic Director, Bill Bragin, emphasized the center’s role as both an educational and cultural hub:

“With Maysoon and Yahael teaching courses in our J-Term semester, alongside their public performances, we highlight the roles artists play as thinkers and educators. This season is a testament to our vibrant and unique mission.”
