Ballaké Sissoko & Derek Gripper: The sound of connection

Ballaké Sissoko & Derek Gripper: The sound of connection at The Arts Center at NYU Abu Dhabi

When Ballaké Sissoko plucks his 21-string kora, time seems to stand still.

A living legend of Mandé music, his fluid improvisations have shaped the global perception of the instrument.

Partnering with South African guitarist Derek Gripper, who has spent two decades reimagining kora compositions for the classical guitar, the duo create a shimmering tapestry of sound rooted in spontaneity.

Having first met in Paris in 2022, the pair’s musical chemistry was immediate; no words, just rhythm, intuition, and deep listening. Their performances unfold like conversations, weaving together ancient griot traditions and modern improvisation.

Maryna Krut: The voice of Ukraine

Maryna Krut: The voice of Ukraine

Ukrainian musician Maryna Krut brings her hauntingly beautiful voice and the distinctive tones of the bandura, a national string instrument that bridges the past and present.

Blending jazz and folk influences, she gives new resonance to her homeland’s music while carrying the emotional weight of a country in conflict.

Her performances are equal parts art and testimony; a reflection of resilience and gratitude, performed both for soldiers on the front lines and audiences around the world.

What to expect

An evening of pure musical connection, where each note tells a story of heritage, hope, and harmony.

From the intricate pluck of the kora to the resonant strum of the bandura, this is music that reaches beyond the stage; a rare opportunity to see world-class artists who communicate through strings, not speech.
