The painting is now nestled between works by Renoir and Manet at the Louvre Abu Dhabi
A slice of Filipino pride has just landed in the heart of the UAE!
The Louvre Abu Dhabi is now home (for the next year) to Una Bulaqueña, the iconic painting by Filipino master Juan Luna.
This is the first time the artwork has left the Philippines in such a high-profile way, and it’s making a big statement about culture, identity, and international friendship.
So, what’s the big deal about Una Bulaqueña? Painted in 1895, during Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines, it shows a poised young woman from Bulacan in traditional dress; graceful, proud, and full of quiet strength.
Luna’s decision to spotlight a Filipina (instead of a European noblewoman, which was the trend) was bold and deeply meaningful. It’s not just a portrait; it’s a declaration of national identity.

Declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2008, the painting is now nestled between works by Renoir and Manet at the Louvre Abu Dhabi, giving Southeast Asian art a well-deserved moment in the global spotlight.
While the National Museum of the Philippines admitted they’ll miss their treasured painting, Legaspi said they’re thrilled it will now reach a global audience.
Una Bulaqueña will be on view at the Louvre Abu Dhabi until June 2026; so if you’re in the region, don’t miss your chance to see this cultural gem in person!
