The UAE’s oldest museum is reopening very soon with a fresh look at 8,000 years of history

Al Ain Museum reopening

This is definitely worth a day trip

One of the jewels in the crown of the history and heritage of Al Ain has just been given a major facelift as Al Ain Museum is now reopening on 24 October.

Originally founded in 1969 by the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, this was the country’s very first museum, a true pioneer in preserving Emirati heritage.

Now, after an extensive redevelopment, the museum has been transformed into a sleek, 8,000-square-metre space that still keeps its original soul intact.

The classic structure remains at the heart of the new design, blending old charm with a fresh, modern edge.

Al Ain is also home to the upcoming Mother of the Nation festival, while a recent docuseries entitled Al Ain: A Living Oasis also highlights its growing cultural appeal among residents and tourists alike.

Best friends Obaid AlBudoor and Salem Al Attas return to the UAE’s Garden City to uncover hidden gems, heartwarming stories, and unforgettable adventures.

8,000 years of history and heritage

Inside, the museum tells the incredible story of human habitation in the Al Ain region, stretching back more than 8,000 years.

You can expect ancient artefacts, traditional objects, and immersive exhibits that reveal how the people of the Garden City lived, worked, and innovated across millennia.

There’s even more to explore with the newly unearthed archaeological sites were discovered during the rebuild.

And they’ve been carefully preserved so visitors can see history literally beneath their feet.

Central to it all is the story of the ancient aflaj irrigation system, an ingenious network that made desert agriculture possible long before modern technology.

The Sultan Fort (the Eastern Fort)

The site also includes Sultan Fort (the Eastern Fort), originally built in 1910 by Sheikh Sultan bin Zayed; a place that once stood at the centre of village life in Harat Al Hosn.

It’s a striking reminder of Al Ain’s deep cultural roots, beautifully restored to its former glory.

With its revamped galleries, archaeological discoveries, and research spaces for academics and students, this landmark will once again anchor Al Ain as one of the UAE’s cultural crown jewels.

Al Ain is often celebrated as the birthplace of the nation’s story, and this latest transformation only deepens the Garden City’s rich cultural legacy

So, if you are looking for the perfect day or weekend trip away, or just looking for a meaningful escape, make sure Al Ain Museum is on your must-visit list.
