The emirate transforms once again into a citywide canvas

Abu Dhabi is once again set to turn itself into an open-air art gallery, with Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial 2026–27 returning at the end of the year.

This eye-catching outdoor exhibition is returning for its second edition, and it’s once again spreading across the emirate like a creative treasure hunt.

This time it’s titled ‘Home: A Glossary for a Communal Sense of Place’, curated by Elvira Dyangani Ose, which already gives you a hint that this isn’t your average sit-in-a-white-cube situation.

Instead, the whole idea is to rethink what “home” even means, using streets, beaches, parks and public spaces as the canvas. Very Abu Dhabi, very ambitious, very walk-around-with-headphones-and-feel-like-you’re-in-a-movie.

The event turns the entire emirate into an open-air cultural experience, where art spills into streets, beaches and everyday public spaces.

You can expect interactive performances, immersive sound walks, and site-specific works that blur the line between audience and participant.

From guided headphone journeys through Al Ain and Abu Dhabi to live poetry written and erased by the sea, it’s less about observing art and more about moving through it, reacting to it, and becoming part of it.

The biennial kicks off in Al Ain on 23 October 2026, before moving to Abu Dhabi city on 15 November 2026, running all the way until 15 February 2027.

So yes, you’ve basically got months to stumble into art whether you planned to or not.

The event builds on the success of ‘Public Matter’, the first Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial, which ran between 2024 and 2025 and featured site-specific works by artists from the UAE and around the world.

Several of those installations proved so popular they’ve since become permanent features of Abu Dhabi’s growing public art collection.

Now, the second edition promises to take things even further by placing participation and community at its heart.

Through research-led commissions, public programmes and opportunities for visitors to engage directly with artists and artworks, the Biennial aims to make art an everyday experience rather than something confined to museums.

So yes, Public Art Abu Dhabi Biennial is coming back, it’s citywide again, and it’s ready to turn everyday places into something you probably didn’t expect on your commute.
