5 MINUTES WITH: Sheryl, a marketing and events manager and Abu Dhabi’s social butterfly

Sheryl Burton

Sheryl moved to Abu Dhabi four years ago and has since carved out a career for herself in marketing and events

Tell us a little bit of yourself

I’m a passionate Marketing and Event organiser in my 30s, based in Abu Dhabi. Over the past five years, I’ve worked at beach clubs, collaborated with celebrities on government projects, and managed Formula 1 events. I’ve also contributed to pandemic-related educational initiatives.

After work, I enjoy kayaking, the turquoise oceans, and socializing at Abu Dhabi’s incredible bars and restaurants. I have a love for photography, I’m constantly snapping photos and capturing reels and adding to my social media, because Abu Dhabi has so many incredible locations to share!

How and when did you move here, and what inspired the move?

2019 the opportunity to work next to the ocean as the Marketing Manager at Saadiyat Beach Club was open online, and I applied! It was followed by an online interview; and then all the pieces fell into place and of course I said yes straight away. Within a few weeks, I found myself bidding farewell to the UK and the cold weather and embracing the unknown.

Next, I’m watching a pod of dolphins and sipping coffee on the beach! My reasons for moving were my love of travel and learning more about other cultures. I had previously travelled to Australia alone and loved it! I made lifelong friendships, and incredible memories and wanted to see more of the world.

How has living in Abu Dhabi shaped your sense of belonging and community?

Living in Abu Dhabi has made me feel right at home. The community here is small but incredibly welcoming. Through various projects and social events, I’ve built strong relationships with owners and entrepreneurs across the city. Abu Dhabi’s charm lies in its genuine warmth and inclusivity, making it easy for anyone to feel like they belong. It’s this sense of community that has truly shaped my experience of living in Abu Dhabi—a place where I feel embraced and valued.

Can you tell us about a particular person in Abu Dhabi who has had a significant impact on your life and why?

I actually fell in love, and it happened within just four days of my arrival! (crazy I know) Abu Dhabi offers diversity and the opportunity to connect with people from around the world. We spent over three years together, creating countless memories in this vibrant city. As a couple, we explored an array of attractions, from exceptional restaurants and luxurious resorts to captivating theme parks and shows. Memories I’ll always cherish, and now my love for American county music!

What is your favourite thing about the emirate and why?

Strolling along the beach, I enjoy the tranquility and the sense of safety that Abu Dhabi provides expats. The ladies’ nights, with their fun theme nights! And also the stunning views, they create unforgettable moments with friends. Additionally, the chance to network with businesses and entrepreneurs adds depth to the experience here in Abu Dhabi—truly offering something for everyone!

Abu Dhabi also presents a lucrative opportunity for real estate investment, boasting a thriving market with an option for both homebuyers and renters! In an incredible location for expats to enjoy.

A myth about Abu Dhabi that you would like to bust?

There are no limitations any individual can thrive in business, ascend to directorial positions, or even assume the role of CEO. I’ve encountered incredible strong females here in Abu Dhabi, serving as great role models. I aspire to follow in their footsteps.

Could you share a memorable moment when you felt the genuine warmth and hospitality of the Abu Dhabi community in your own life?

During my first job in Abu Dhabi, my knowledge of the city was limited. However, a local family extended a generous invitation to their home, they treated me to traditional dishes and shared information on Abu Dhabi and where to visit. Their hospitality and warmth as a family reflected the community, and the food was delicious!
