Joe Cooper

The well-known English personality shares his thoughts on life in the capital

Joe Cooper is a well-known radio breakfast host in Abu Dhabi. When he’s not stuck behind the mic every morning you can find him exploring and touring the capital with his lovely wife Mille

Tell us a little bit about yourself

Oh hi, I’m Joe Cooper. I’ve always love performing and being the front man. This started back onstage in London’s west end as a kid, from there I presented on the Disney Channel UK as a teen. I then fell into radio in the UK and have been doing that ever since. I now present the Radio 1 breakfast show across the country weekdays from 6-10 am.

How and when did you move here, and what inspired the move?

I moved over from the UK two years ago. The UAE has always been a place I’ve felt at home and safe; it’s always inspired me to be the best version of myself. After the last trip I did as a tourist to Yas Island to visit the parks, I decided it was the place I needed to be. Six weeks later I was back on a plane out to Abu Dhabi, and I haven’t been back since.

How has living in Abu Dhabi shaped your sense of belonging and community?

With a real mixture of both locals and expats across the capital, settling in was never tough when I arrived. And it’s only got better with every day that goes by. The community feel across Abu Dhabi is great, and everyone is there to help each other out.

Can you tell us about a particular person in Abu Dhabi who has had a significant impact on your life and why?

My wife, Millie. We did this move together with no hesitation and grown into different people in the last two years. Stronger and more mature. Moving away can be tough but this has been a breeze because of her continuous support. She is by my side every step of the way. She’s also achieved great things whilst being here and I look up to that. The main thing is, she loves the country as well and we treasure every moment and feel lucky to wake up every day in this beautiful place.

What is your favourite thing about the emirate and why?

I’m a massive fan of Yas Island. The mix of adrenaline, world class theme parks, great bars and restaurants but also the living communities is something really special. Having an annual pass, myself, I spend a lot of time in the parks, what more could you ask for!?

A myth about Abu Dhabi that you would like to bust…

A lot of people have the perception that coming to the Middle East is strict. It’s the opposite. The UAE is very westernised now and opens its arms to visitors. Abu Dhabi is a wonderful tourist destination offering amazing experiences for everyone. There are endless places to explore and dive into.

Could you share a memorable moment when you felt the genuine warmth and hospitality of the Abu Dhabi community in your own life?

The support you have around if you have any questions, want to make friends, the sense of security among the people. It fascinates me and it’s something that keeps getting stronger every day. It doesn’t matter what job, your background or how you live, someone is always there for you.
