David moved to Abu Dhabi two years ago when he took up a job with Rangers Soccer Academy
Tell us a little bit of yourself
My name is David Hill and I was born and raised in Bellshill, Scotland! I spent my time at the University of the West of Scotland studying Sports Coaching, graduating in 2021. Since I left school I was continuously looking for employment within football. I was fortunate to have so many fantastic opportunities working for the Scottish FA, which led me into working for my boyhood club – a dream come true. I am now the lead coach of the Rangers Soccer Academy here in Abu Dhabi.
How and when did you move here, and what inspired the move
I moved to Abu Dhabi in August 2022. I spent the summer doing a lot of work with Rangers and was made aware of an opportunity to come out and grow the academy that started in 2021. I applied, completed the interview and before you know it I was here. Moving abroad was never something that I had considered, but being able to work full time in football with the club I supported all my life was a massive inspiration behind the move!
How has living in Abu Dhabi shaped your sense of belonging and community?
Our academy has become a massive community and a lot of our parents and players have been amazing since arriving. They have continuously offered their support, even if it is the silliest of questions. Some have always looked out for me since arriving on my own and it has been a huge help.
For example, I didn’t have a car when I first moved over and there was one parent in particular who always offered a lift home as he hated the idea of me getting a taxi, something very small but also very caring! So many people just want to help out and make you feel welcome!
Can you tell us about a particular person in Abu Dhabi who has had a significant impact on your life and why?
I think it would be hard to pin-point anyone in particular, but my colleague Mark and his wife Sarah have been a huge support for me. They are always inviting me out which has allowed me to grow my social circle which in turn has improved my overall experience here in Abu Dhabi.
A big shoutout to Scott Hunter as well who has been a huge help since arriving in Abu Dhabi. He has introduced me to many people, took me to many places and just generally been a helping hand. he even invited me to his wedding and it was great to share that moment with him and his now wife!
What is your favourite thing about the emirate and why?
Abu Dhabi has so much to offer, but if I had to pick one I would say Yas Island! The place has something for everyone, whether it be the nightlife or something chilled, it is the place to be here!
A myth about Abu Dhabi that you would like to bust
That is always hot in Abu Dhabi!! During the winter months it is surprisingly cold, so trying to explain to family and friends back home that it is cold when it is still 20 degrees is a challenge, they just laugh at me!
Could you share a memorable moment when you felt the genuine warmth and hospitality of the Abu Dhabi community in your own life?
As mentioned earlier, the parent who was very kind to drop me off after sessions and games was very nice. Also, our community of parents within the academy have always been incredible, and to see how close all the parents and players have become is something to be proud of!
