Yas Mall is making a major meaningful step towards inclusivity
Yas Mall has officially become the first mall in the Middle East to roll out the globally recognised Hidden Disabilities Sunflower programme, and it’s a meaningful step towards making everyday experiences easier and more welcoming for everyone.
This is big news for inclusivity in Abu Dhabi, meaning your next shopping trip just got a whole lot more thoughtful.
So, what does this actually mean when you’re strolling through the mall? You might notice visitors wearing a green sunflower lanyard.
It’s a simple but powerful symbol that lets staff know the person may have a non-visible disability including conditions like autism, chronic pain, or anxiety, and may need a little extra support, patience, or understanding.
What’s great is that this isn’t just a surface-level initiative. Behind the scenes, the mall’s entire customer-facing team has been trained to recognise the lanyard and respond with care and awareness.

It’s all about creating a smoother, more comfortable experience, whether that’s offering assistance, giving someone more time, or simply being more mindful in interactions.
This milestone didn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of a strong collaboration between Aldar Properties, Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination, and Topland Group, who brought the programme to life locally.
Even better, thousands of the sunflower lanyards have been produced by People of Determination themselves, adding another layer of community impact to the initiative.
It also ties into a much bigger picture. Abu Dhabi has been steadily working towards becoming a more inclusive, accessible city, and this move helps push that vision forward.
By embedding these practices into everyday places like malls, it sends a strong message: inclusion isn’t an add-on, it’s essential.
