Abu Dhabi was recently named as one of the safest cities in the world – and now the roads are set to become even safer (we hope)!

This week the capital is welcoming a new revolution to the city as the Chinese autonomous vehicle pioneer WeRide recently partnered with Uber to launch a groundbreaking robotaxi service in Abu Dhabi.

This marks Uber’s first international deployment of autonomous vehicles and the largest commercial robotaxi operation in the Middle East to date.

The service is now available in key areas such as Saadiyat Island, Yas Island, and on routes to and from Zayed International Airport.

Although safety drivers are currently present in each vehicle, WeRide plans to make the fleet fully driverless by the end of 2025.

Uber users can opt in for a ride with a WeRide vehicle through the app’s Ride Preferences settings.

The initiative builds on WeRide’s achievement of receiving the UAE’s first national-level autonomous driving license in 2023, granting them legal access to public roads across the country.

Beyond boosting mobility, this collaboration reflects Abu Dhabi’s strategic push to become a global hub for innovation, AI, and smart city technologies.

With sights set on profitability within five years, WeRide continues to navigate the complex terrain of global expansion, regulation, and public trust in driverless transport.
