Authorities urge residents to follow safety guidelines, drive cautiously, and avoid flood-prone areas
The National Centre of Meteorology has issued a fresh weather alert as rain, thunderstorms, dust, and strong winds of up to 55 kph are expected across the Emirates in the coming days.
Residents in Abu Dhabi and Dubai have already experienced heavy downpours, with thunder rumbling and lightning illuminating the leaden skies. Some areas may even face isolated tornadoes.
Authorities are urging caution as torrential rain continues to lash the region, creating slippery roads and reduced visibility, while dust and gusty winds add to the challenging conditions. Residents are advised to stay alert, follow official guidance, and take extra care on the roads.
The NCM explained that a surface low-pressure system, combined with an upper-air low-pressure trough, is increasing cloud formation and raising the likelihood of scattered convective rainfall.
Authorities, including the UAE’s Higher Committee for Internal Security and the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA), have reinforced readiness to respond to weather-related challenges. Continuous monitoring and real-time updates are being shared through official channels to ensure public safety.
Safe driving during rain
Motorists are urged to drive cautiously during periods of rainfall. It is important to reduce speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and avoid sudden braking.

Drivers should ensure their headlights are working, windows and mirrors are clean, and visibility is never compromised. In heavy rain or fog, it is safer to pull over until conditions improve.

Authorities also warn against risky behaviour such as attempting to cross flooded streets, entering valleys or low-lying areas, or stopping near electrical facilities, open spaces, or trees.
Such actions not only endanger lives but can also result in fines of up to AED2,000, black points on the license, and even vehicle impoundment for up to 60 days. Obstructing emergency responders during severe weather can carry an AED1,000 fine and additional penalties.
Even in less extreme conditions, drivers should remain patient and vigilant, avoid overtaking on wet roads, use low-beam headlights in poor visibility, and test brakes after passing through standing water. Planning extra travel time is also crucial, as wet roads often slow traffic.
Avoiding risky areas
It is best to avoid valleys, flood-prone zones, and areas where water tends to accumulate. Mountains and open spaces should also be avoided during heavy rain, and sea travel is discouraged.
