Heading to Saudi for the 2034 FIFA World Cup? Here’s what to expect with no licensed drinks

The countdown to the 2034 FIFA World Cup has begun, and as football fever rises, so do the questions about what to expect in Saudi Arabia – especially for UAE fans planning to cross the border for the tournament.

One key confirmation?

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has no plans to change its rules on licensed drinks.

Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the UK, Prince Khalid bin Bandar bin Sultan Al Saud, made it clear in a recent interview with British radio station LBC News: “Rather like our weather, it’s a dry country.

At the moment, we don’t allow [licensed drinks], but plenty of fun can be had without it. It’s not 100 per cent necessary.”

His statement reinforces the Kingdom’s stance on maintaining its cultural identity as it prepares to host football’s most prestigious event.

“If you want to drink after you leave, you’re welcome to, but at the moment, we don’t have [licensed drinks],” he added, making it clear that visitors will need to adapt to local customs during the month-long tournament.

The 2034 FIFA World Cup will be held across five cities – Riyadh, Jeddah, Khobar, Abha, and the futuristic city of Neom – and will feature an expanded 48-team format, making it the largest World Cup in history.

The tournament marks another milestone for the Middle East, following Qatar’s 2022 edition, which similarly upheld cultural norms while hosting football fans from around the world.

With millions expected to travel, including many expats from the UAE, understanding the cultural and logistical aspects of the tournament will be key.

While fans won’t find licensed drinks inside stadiums or fan zones, they can expect state-of-the-art venues, world-class entertainment, and a football spectacle like never before.

For those heading to Saudi Arabia in 2034, one thing is certain: the passion for football will be flowing.
