With the installation of Reverse Vending Machines (RVM), recycling plastic and aluminium is easier and fun!
It’s World Environment Day, and Abu Dhabi is clearly honouring the same with much gusto!
From an Escape Room on wheels to learn more about nature, to opening 20 new recycling centres, the UAE capital is certainly putting its greenest leg forward.
And now, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and ADNOC Distribution have rolled out the state-of-the-art Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) initiative!
The RVMs have been installed across ADNOC Distribution retail service stations, with the process scheduled to be completed by the end of July.
A simple yet effective solution to promote a circular plastic economy, the RVMs incentivise people to recycle their used plastic bottles, aluminum cans and more.
This serves multiple purposes, including a reduced amount of plastic ending up in ecosystems and landfills, majorly eliminating single-use plastic bags, and recovering at least 50% of single-use plastic bottles.

Each machine automatically updates customers on the number of RVM deposits completed, allowing them to track their recycling efforts.
Additionally, each RVM will automatically send an electronic alert to a dedicated recycling collection agent once full to efficiently collect and transport bottles and cans to a local recycling centre.
Alongside the collaboration with ADNOC Distribution, major retailers support this policy, including Carrefour, Lulu, Abu Dhabi Coops, Choithrams, Spinneys, Waitrose and Spar.
To support the success of the bottle recovery initiative, EAD has engaged key stakeholders such as large retailers, major attraction sites, real estate developers, among others. The Agency has also invited private-sector packaging entities to participate in the project.
Furthermore, the Agency has been working with Veolia through its RECAPP initiative to deploy RVMs in prime locations with high footfall including malls, academic institutions, Abu Dhabi Corniche and other visitor attraction sites.
