UAE private sector embraces innovative, flexible Ramadan work hours this February and March
Working hours across the UAE will be reduced during the holy month of Ramadan, in line with labour regulations that apply to both the public and private sectors.
With Ramadan most likely to begin on Thursday, 19 February, employees can expect shorter workdays and more flexible schedules to reflect fasting and adjusted daily routines.

In an effort to accommodate the unique needs of the holy month, ministries and federal agencies are permitted to continue with flexible or remote work schedules.

Under Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022, private sector employees are entitled to a mandatory reduction of two working hours per day throughout Ramadan.
This rule applies to all staff regulated by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, regardless of role, seniority, or religion. Authorities have repeatedly confirmed in previous years that the reduction applies equally to Muslim and non-Muslim employees, as it is a workplace regulation rather than a religious provision.
Employers are permitted to organise work schedules flexibly, including staggered shifts or remote working arrangements, provided the two-hour reduction is respected.
Overtime rules remain in place for employees who are required to work beyond the reduced daily hours.
For the public sector, specific Ramadan working hours are typically announced closer to the start of the month through official circulars issued by federal and local government entities.
These usually include shorter daily hours, flexible start and finish times, and, in some cases, remote or hybrid working options depending on operational requirements.
Individual emirates and departments may further tailor schedules, particularly for customer-facing services and essential operations.
