Abu Dhabi continues to rise as the regions’ major basketball hub
Abu Dhabi is solidifying its position as the Middle East’s basketball hub, with the NBA and the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) announcing a long-term extension of their collaboration.
The renewed partnership will see more preseason NBA Global Games in the capital, the launch of an NBA Global Academy, and expanded youth development and fan programming for years to come.
The NBA Global Academy, based in Abu Dhabi, will serve as the global hub for the league’s Academy program, offering year-round elite basketball development and academic training for top high-school-age athletes from the UAE, the Middle East, and beyond.
The academy will provide training for up to 20 local boys, basketball programs for local girls, and residential programming for 24 international male prospects.
“Extending our partnership with the NBA reinforces Abu Dhabi’s role as the new home of basketball in the Middle East,” said HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi.
“The NBA Global Academy will open pathways for UAE-based athletes, coaches, and sports professionals, while the NBA Global Games will inspire the next generation. Beyond hosting world-class events, the NBA’s grassroots programs encourage healthy, active lifestyles and connect our residents to the values of sport.”
NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum added: “Our collaboration with DCT Abu Dhabi has been instrumental in growing basketball participation and fandom across the region. Launching the NBA Global Academy here will help develop elite players from the Middle East and around the world.”

Since 2022, eight NBA teams have played preseason games in Abu Dhabi, with the 2025 NBA Abu Dhabi Games selling out Etihad Arena for matchups between the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers.
Participation in basketball has increased by 60 per cent in the UAE, with fan engagement rising over 25 per cent.
The extended partnership also includes the expansion of Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA leagues, from four existing leagues in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain to six this fall, aiming for 12 by 2028.
Abu Dhabi will host two annual tournaments for top youth and elite players globally, starting with the 2025 NBA Academy Showcase at NYU Abu Dhabi.
The NBA Academy program emphasises holistic development, covering health, wellness, character building, and life skills, with more than 150 graduates representing their national teams, 100 attending NCAA Division I programs, and over 40 playing professionally, including 15 in the NBA.
