The 71st Miss World Festival will be held in the UAE

An Instagram announcement has got all the beauty queens eagerly waiting for the world-renowned festival.

Set to take place in May, the UAE is all set to play host to this year’s Miss World pageant.

While the previous edition was held in March 2022, that was technically the 2021 edition of the festival.

The announcement on Miss World Organisation’s Instagram page was confirmed by Ms Julia Morley CBE.

Since the competition’s inception in 1951, its foray into UAE is a first for both the country and the larger Middle East region. This is also the first competition since Nepal-born British businessman Deependra Gurung became the company’s new co-owner.

Last year’s competition saw Pamala Serena represent the UAE, although she didn’t make it to the final rounds. Karolina Bielawska – of Poland – walked away with last year’s crown and will crown her successor at the coronation ceremony. Bielawska made history by becoming only the second Polish beauty queen to win the title.

The oldest-running international beauty pageant in history, Miss World was created in Great Britain and has come a long way since the original bikini contest conceptualised by Eric Morley. However, the rules remain as archaic and misogynistic as the times of 1951, begging the need to question the existence of such a competition in today’s day and age.

For instance, entry rules require you to be unmarried without children and between the ages of 17 and 27 while also being a national of the country you choose to represent.

While an exact date and venue for this year’s competition are yet to be confirmed, one hopes that the team behind an arguably prestigious event will wake up and smell the patriarchy in time to avoid getting cancelled.
