Abu Dhabi authorities have announced the latest fines along with the most efficient methods for payment

Abu Dhabi is keeping its streets safer and cleaner with a series of updated fines and civic regulations, and if you live in or drive through the capital, it’s worth staying in the know.

From updated traffic penalties to new rules around reporting accidents and even how to appeal fines, there’s a lot happening.

But the good news? Knowing the latest updates can help you avoid costly mistakes; and maybe even save some dirhams along the way.

Here’s a simple breakdown of what’s changed, what to watch out for, and how to stay on the right side of the law.

Abu Dhabi traffic fines: the ultimate guide

Speeding

Probably the most common infraction, you’ll have to remember that there are speed cameras all around the capital monitoring how fast (or how slow) you’re going.

Yes, if you drive too slow you can also get a fine – AED 400 to be precise. This only applies if you’re driving below the minimum speed (if there is one).

If you’re speeding, fines start at AED 300 if you exceed the speed limit by no more than 10km/hour, and go up to AED 3,000 if you exceed the speed limit by more than 80km/hour.

Run a red light?

In Abu Dhabi, red-light offenders face a AED1,000 fine, 12 black points, and a 30-day vehicle impound. Want your car back sooner?

Pay up AED50,000; otherwise, it might be auctioned off after three months. If the violation leads to a fatal accident or involves reckless behaviour (like racing or driving under the influence), fines soar to AED100,000 or more, plus potential jail time.

Hit-and-run

The law now demands that drivers report any accident within three hours, or face up to a year in jail and between AED 50,000 to AED100,000 in fines.

This applies whether you caused or suffered an injury. Forgoing official repair permits? That’ll cost you too.

Reckless driving

Careless driving isn’t just frowned upon; it could earn you a AED100,000 fine (to release your vehicle) plus immediate arrest.

Dangerous offences, like racing or dangerously blocking traffic, result in 23 black points and a 60-day impound.

Jaywalking or driving without a license

Crossing the street outside designated zones could cost AED5,000–AED10,000, possible jail, or both, especially in areas with speeds over 80 km/h. Driving on a suspended or unrecognised license?

Expect fines into the tens of thousands and even jail time.

Want to save?

Abu Dhabi Police now offer a 35 per cent discount for paying traffic fines early (within 60 days). Late to the game? You can still get 25 per cent off if you settle within a year. Most traffic fines qualify, but watch out for serious offenses, they don’t budge.

TAMM makes appeals easier

Snagged a fine for illegally dumping trash or having a messy property? You can now appeal right through the TAMM app; no paperwork, no hassle.

But do it fast: you’ve only one week to appeal, and you must show proof the issue is fixed; or your fine could double.

Quick guide on how to avoid costly fines in Abu Dhabi

  1. Stop at amber lights. Sure, you might make it; but is it worth AED50,000 and 12 black points?
  2. Involved in an accident? Report it fast, within three hours. Your phone bill is cheaper than the fine (or jail time).
  3. Drive safe, drive smart. Reckless driving = stolen vehicle + huge fine + probable arrest.
  4. Don’t jaywalk. In high-speed areas, it’s not just dangerous; it’s criminal.
  5. Missed a fine? Pay ASAP for a 35 per cent discount. After that, 25 per cent is still better than full price.
  6. Got a random fine for property issues? Appeal it via TAMM. Just fix it first.
