Global cyber outage disrupts flights and services worldwide

 

Anybody reading the news online today will already know that a major tech outage is affecting flight operations, causing severe disruption across the globe. The outage has also impacted other industries, including banks and health services, shops and other business across the globe.

But what about here in the UAE?

Although no news abounds in the press specifically about the IT outage affecting the UAE, two members of Team Yalla were at the Co-Op in Abu Dhabi Mall, where all card transactions are currently compromised.

Elsewhere in the world, reports are coming in that Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest hubs, is experiencing significant delays due to a global cyber outage,

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported a communication issue that led to the grounding of all flights from several major US airlines, including Delta, United, and American Airlines. This ground stop affects flights from these airlines regardless of their intended destinations.

Passengers at the UK’s Edinburgh Airport are unable to use automated boarding pass scanners, and Ryanair has reported issues as well.

Downdetector, a site that tracks service disruptions, noted significant increases in issues affecting Microsoft applications, banking sites, and airline apps.

Scandinavian airline SAS confirmed technical problems with its booking engine, making it impossible to book tickets online.

The cyber outage has also affected Australian media, banks, and telecom companies internationally. IT security firm Crowdstrike reported awareness of crashes on Microsoft’s Windows operating system related to its Falcon sensor.
